The Desert Museum of Rajasthan

Beyond walls - a museum shaped by the desert.

Where knowledge, stories, and experiences come together.

Arna-Jharna: The Desert Museum of Rajasthan reimagines what a museum can be. Spread across the open landscapes of the Thar Desert, it moves beyond walls to embrace the region’s ecology – its land, flora, fauna, and communities – as integral parts of its living exhibits.

Envisioned by the late Padma Bhushan Komal Kothari, one of India’s foremost folklorists and oral historians, Arna-Jharna is not merely a collection of objects but a space of learning and dialogue. It invites visitors to explore traditional knowledge systems, folk practices, and the interconnected rhythms of desert life through immersive and interactive experiences.

"Awesome place to learn about local music, culture, and fascinating facts about brooms. The environment is great, with large open areas full of peacocks and cacti. A wonderful experience overall—friendly people, fresh air, and a special charm if you visit on the right day."
Govind
"Beautiful place amidst nature where you can enjoy and learn about rich Rajasthani culture. Surrounded by vibrant flora and fauna, it’s best visited during the monsoon when a seasonal waterfall appears. Avoid May–June as the scorching heat can be intense."
Jitesh
"Best place to visit with friends and family! The views are incredible, especially with the waterfall during the monsoon season. Just take care of children as it can get quite slippery 💞. A refreshing and memorable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike."
Mohan
"Best eco-tourism place to learn about local Rajasthani culture and the diversity of the Thar Desert. You can spot many bird species, mostly raptors. A beautiful waterfall formed by the rainfall drainage system and a serene holy pond make this place truly special."
